FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: PSJ routs Holmes County in SSAC opener

Port St. Joe breezed past Holmes County 42-14 in its first round game in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference playoff opener on Friday night at home. 

Colin Amison tossed four touchdown passes for the Tiger Sharks on Friday, hooking up with Mason Hobbs from 40 yards out for the first score and then finding Nick Jefferson for a 97-yard strike to make it 14-0 early. 

Aiden Gainer's 30-yard touchdown run in the second quarter gave Port St. Joe a 21-0 lead at halftime. The Tiger Sharks quickly scored on their first series of the second half as Amison hit Lejuan Zaccaro for a 65-yard touchdown before later finding Jefferson again for an 8-yard score.  

Dorian Flemming scored the final touchdown of the night for the Tiger Sharks on a 15-yard carry. 

It was an especially impressive performance for the Tiger Sharks considering that it was their first game since beating Graceville 56-30 on Oct. 2. 

"I was very happy with the way our guys played," Port St. Joe coach Tanner Jones said. "There's still some concerns and corrections to make, but the best thing for us is we got to play four quarters of football. I'm happy with the way the guys played and the excitement they had all week. We were thrilled to be back." 

The No. 2 seed Tiger Sharks (5-1) will next move on to the semifinals of the SSAC playoff to play host to No. 6 Jefferson County (0-5), which advanced through the quarterfinals by forfeit after Blountstown had to cancel due to COVID-19 concerns. 

"Jefferson County doesn't have the best record, but (Jefferson County) coach (Ira) Reynolds does a heck of a job," Jones said. They're a very young team and they should be really good in a couple of years. We're glad to be getting to play them. Every game we play for the next couple of weeks helps us get ready to play Blountstown in the first game of the playoffs." 

In other SSAC action, top-seeded Baker eased by Graceville 35-6 to set up a semifinal matchup with No. 4 Sneads thanks to the Pirates' 35-14 win over No. 5 Wewahitchka.
